The Russian Federation is the world’s largest country covering over 17m2 km, with a population of over 143 million. Military conscription is compulsory, giving Russia a total of over 1 million active service personnel. Military spending is at approx $70bn per year (2014 figures), putting Russia into third place behind the USA and China, although expenditure is expected to rise substantially. Russia is the world’s largest exporter of arms, with a 30% share of the total export trade. Russia is a founder member of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO).
