The Royal Navy is the UK’s naval warfare capability, known unofficially as the ‘Senior Service’. As of 19 March 2016, there are 77 commissioned ships (including submarines) in the Royal Navy, including an amphibious assault ship, 2 amphibious transport docks, 4 ballistic missile submarines (which maintain the UK’s nuclear deterrent), 7 nuclear fleet submarines, 6 guided missile destroyers, 13 frigates, 15 mine-countermeasure vessels and 22 patrol vessels. In addition, the Royal Navy can count upon 9 ships of the Royal Fleet Auxiliary (RFA) and 5 Merchant Navy ships. The Fleet Air Arm comprises 174 aircraft.
