Challenger 2 is the main battle tank (MBT) of the British Army. It was designed and built by the British company Vickers Defence Systems (now known as BAE Systems Land & Armaments) and has been in service since 1998. Production ceased in 2002, but the Army plans to keep the vehicle operational until 2035 with its current Life Extension Project. The Army is currently equipped with 249 Challenger 2 tanks (UK Armed Forces Equipment and Formations 2016). Unit cost is estimated at upwards of £4 million (1999 prices).
