Royal Navy Escorts Russian Warships
HMS Diamond Monitors Two Russian Warships Passing Through the English Channel
Royal Navy high-readiness escort ship HMS Diamond was sent to monitor the progress of two Russian warships as they entered waters in the UK’s area of interest on Tuesday, 7 August.
The Russian destroyer Severomorsk and the cruiser Marshal Ustinov passed through the English Channel en route to deployment following the Russian Navy Days event at St Petersburg.
Commander Ben Keith, Commanding Officer of HMS Diamond, said that ‘HMS Diamond is proud to once again be playing her part in protecting the UK by monitoring these vessels on their transit.’
HMS Diamond is a Type 45 destroyer based at Portsmouth on 24-hour alert to respond to any incident in or around British waters.
‘This is routine business for the Royal Navy,’ Commander Keith explained, ‘ and the second time my ship’s company have undertaken such an escort duty this summer.’
