SDF Takes Tabqah Airfield
Progress Made In Syria Against ISIS
In Syria, the Syrian Democratic Forces have completely isolated the east side of Raqqa, and they are engaged in a tough battle to seize Tabqah and Tabqah dam, CJTF-OIR commander US Army Gen. Stephen J. Townsend told reporters.
SDF in Control of Key Airfield
“Yesterday, they completed the seizure of Tabqah airfield,” he said. “This was a great accomplishment by a capable partner force. They were supported by coalition advisers, U.S. and coalition airpower, Marine heavy artillery and Army Apache helicopter gunships.”
Al-Tabqah Airfield had been the scene of heavy fighting between the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) and the Syrian Arab Army in August 2014, during the Syrian Civil War. Al-Tabqa was the last bastion for Syrian military forces in Raqqa province, which at the end of the battle came fully under the control of the ISIL. Its recapture is a significant milestone in the defeat of ISIL.
